- The camp is named after the Dalai Lama, who camped here in 1959 after crossing into India.
- The area was previously occupied by the 5 Assam Rifles and included two firing ranges.
- The Sonai Rupai Sanctuary has faced significant encroachment problems.
- In 2015, 120 sq km of the sanctuary was declared part of the Nameri Tiger Reserve.
- As of now, around 100 sq km is still under encroachment.
- The Indian Army started vacating the camp in December.
