19 Traditional Items From Assam Secure GI Tag, Emphasizing Heritage Promotion

  • GI Tag Recognition:
    • Recently, Six traditional crafts from Assam, including Asharikandi terracotta craft, pani meteka (water hyacinth) craft, Sarthebari metal craft, japi (bamboo headgear), Mising handloom products, and the Bihu dhol, have obtained the Geographical Indication (GI) tag.
    • Additionally, thirteen other products from Assam, such as Bodo dokhona (women’s attire), Bodo eri silk, Bodo jwmgra, Bodo gamsa, Bodo thorkha (a musical instrument), and Bodo sifung (a long flute), have also received the GI tag.
    • This marks the first time such a large number of products from Assam have secured the GI recognition, highlighting the region's rich heritage and cultural significance.
    • The GI recognition validates the historical and artistic importance of Assam's indigenous art and craft forms, providing a boost to the preservation and promotion of the state's unique heritage.
  • Challenges:
    • Lack of patronage from government authorities
    • Lack of exposure and market linkage
  • Way Forward:
    • There is a need for an integrated approach focusing on innovations in 
      • design, 
      • value addition, and 
      • adequate market linkage
        to ensure that Assam's products receive due recognition.
    • The Act East Policy should focus on highlighting the region's commercial potential to a broader audience on ground.
